Biographical Note
Ben McCutchen Moïse (1943- ), born in Bishopville, South Carolina, was a conservation officer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNER) from 1978 to 2002. From 1981 to 1987 he served as an investigator on the SCDNR undercover operations team and in 1990 he was awarded the Guy Bradley Award by the North American Fish and Wildlife Foundation in recognition of his achievements in law enforcement. Moïse is the author of Ramblings of a Lowcountry Game Warden: A Memoir, a personal account of his experiences patrolling the coastal waters and woods of South Carolina, published in 2008, and the editor of A Southern Sportsman: The Hunting Memoirs of Henry Edwards Davis, published in 2010. Moïse is a frequent contributor to the Charleston Mercury, Garden and Gun, and other regional publications.

The collection contains material relating to the writings and professional activities of Ben McCutchen Moïse, author and conservation officer for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) from 1978 to 2002. Writings contain materials associated with Moïse's work as the author of Ramblings of a Lowcountry Game Warden: A Memoir, the editor of A Southern Sportsman: The Hunting Memoirs of Henry Edwards Davis and various magazine articles written for regional publications including the Charleston Mercury Magazine and Garden and Gun. Contains materials regarding what constitutes baiting, the deliberate manipulation of seed bearing vegetation in areas where waterfowl are being hunted.
Contains materials regarding shrimp baiting, the act of placing bait near stakes and harvesting white shrimp around these stakes during darkness, its legality, and possible impact on the local shrimp population.
Files assembled by Moïse during his career as a conservation officer. Files can include memorandums, clippings, correspondence, photographs, pamphlets, summons records reports, and other administrative documents. Files contain original as well as photocopied materials.
