Biographical Note
Harry Levinson (1894-1956) was born in Manning, South Carolina, to Russian Jewish immigrants. After leaving school at the age of 12, Levinson worked as a salesman in a family clothing store in Bishopville, South Carolina. He was drafted into the army during World War I and assigned to an office in Paris, France. After the war, Levinson returned to Bishopville and married Anna Katz, the sister of a fellow Jewish solider. In 1927, Harry and Anna Levinson moved with their two children, Irene and David, to Fairmont, North Carolina, where they opened a clothing store. Levinson was elected president of the Fairmont Rotary Club, appointed to the school board, and was active in the local Masonic Lodge.
