Biographical and Historical Note

The Cleveland Jewish Orphan Asylum was established by the B'nai B'rith Midwest District in 1868. Samuel Wolfenstein became the superintendent in 1878, and by 1900, the orphanage housed over 400 children. With the 1929 purchase of a new facility in the University Heights suburb of Cleveland, the orphanage was renamed the Bellefaire Orphanage.

Nathan Kohler (1892-1965) was the father of Marjorie Kohler Abrams of Greenville, South Carolina. Kohler grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, where his father sold porcelain dishes imported from China. After his father was murdered in 1902, Kohler and his brother Benjamin (1893-1975) were sent to the Cleveland Jewish Orphan Asylum, where they remained until they completed high school.

The image shows Superintendent Samuel Wolfenstein with children residing at the orphanage. Nathan Kohler, father of Marjorie Kohler Abrams of Greenville, South Carolina, is pictured in the photograph. He and his brother Benjamin were sent to the orphanage in 1902 after the death of their father, a peddler from Knoxville, Tennessee.
