Descriptive Summary

Abstract:	A photograph album containing snapshots from a vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina. "Camp Lawless" is written on the album, which was likely created by Paul Hamilton Rogers or Ruth Richardson Rogers. The album includes pictures of the friends, including Clifton Moïse and Marguerite Cromer, at the cabin as well as at the Biltmore Estate.

Biographical Note

Paul Hamilton Rogers (1883-1960) was born in Society Hill, South Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1906 and worked for the Carolina Fiber Company in Hartsville, South Carolina. Rogers married Ruth Richardson in 1913; she died a month after the wedding. In 1920, Paul Rogers married Arabella Thomas (1896-1992) of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Ruth Richardson Rogers (1885-1913) was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina. Before marrying Paul Hamilton Rogers, Richardson taught at Queen's College in Charlotte, North Carolina. Arabella Thomas was one of Richardson's students.

Lucius Clifton Moïse (1881-1930s) was born in Sumter, South Carolina, to Esther Lyon and Edwin Warren Moïse. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, he returned to Sumter and became a music teacher. In 1912, Moïse married Marguerite Cromer, who died circa 1917. Moïse did not remarry. After his death, the University of South Carolina established a music scholarship in his memory for Sumter County high school students.

Collection Overview

The collection consists of a photograph album containing snapshots from a vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina. "Camp Lawless" is written on the album, which was likely created by Paul Hamilton Rogers or his first wife, Ruth Richardson Rogers.

The album includes a handwritten list of camp laws and lyrical verses describing those who stayed at the cabin: Clifton Moïse, Marguerite Cromer, Paul Hamilton Rogers, Ruth Richardson, "Chappie," "Smythe" (who is not pictured in the album), Marion, "Muff,"  "Loulie," and Ben.

The album's black-and-white photographs are mostly of the group playing cards, singing, hiking, washing, and doing chores. Also included are photographs of the Biltmore Estate and the home of former North Carolina governor Zebulon Baird Vance.
