Historical Note
Hornik's Bargain House was owned and operated by Morris Hornik (1863-1937). He was born in Jaroslaw, Austria (present-day Poland), to a grain merchant family. At the age of fourteen, Hornik left for London, where he spent two years before he immigrated to the United States circa 1879 via New York City. About 1882, Hornik moved to Bonneau, South Carolina, and worked for a Jewish merchant by the name of Nagel. Six years later, Hornik moved to Charleston and opened M. Hornik, a clothing store, at 188 King Street. The store was moved to Meeting Street in January 1893 and later renamed M. Hornik & Company. During this time, the store began selling wholesale dry goods and notions to rural stores. The company liquidated in 1978.
