Abstract: Monthly steering committee minutes and annual report of the Victory Hostess Organization established in Charleston, South Carolina, by Nat Shulman of the National Jewish Welfare Board. Minutes and annual report were recorded by Lenora Stine, Secretary and Chairwoman of the Jewish Welfare Board Entertainment Committee. The Victory Hostess Organization (VHO) was established to host dances and entertainment for Jewish GIs in eastern South Carolina during World War II.

Historical Note

Established in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1943 by Nat Shulman of the National Jewish Welfare Board, the Victory Hostess Organization (VHO) arranged dances and entertainment for Jewish GIs in eastern South Carolina during World War II. Dances were held once a month at the Daughters of Israel Hall and scheduled around national, seasonal, or religious holidays. VHO steering committee meetings were held at the Hebrew Institute on St. Philip Street and at the USO Building in downtown Charleston.

After working with the Jewish Welfare Board in the USO program, Nat Shulman became the first director of the Charleston Jewish Community Center in 1945. He remained the director of the JCC until 1972, when he became the director of the Charleston Jewish Welfare Fund, later renamed the Charleston Jewish Federation. From 1981 to 1993, Shulman served as consultant to the Charleston Jewish Federation. He also helped establish the Charleston Jewish Community Relations Committee.


Collection Overview

Monthly steering committee minutes and annual report of the Victory Hostess Organization formed in Charleston, South Carolina, by Nat Shulman of the National Jewish Welfare Board. Materials relate to the formation of the organization as well as entertainment planning for monthly Saturday evening dances in cooperation with the United Services Organization. Minutes and annual report were recorded by Lenora Stine, Secretary and Chairwoman of the local JWB entertainment committee. Also included is correspondence addressed to Stine from Walter Rothschild, chairman of the National Jewish Welfare Board's army and navy committee.
