Biographical Note

Abe Cohen (1906-1969) was born to Sarah and Jonah Cohen in Lithuania. He was the youngest of six children, and about four years old when he immigrated to the United States with his family. As an adult, he moved to Clio, South Carolina, after three of his brothers settled in the nearby areas of Latta, South Carolina, and Gibson and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He married Betty Mark (b.1911) of Greenwood, South Carolina, in 1934 and the couple settled in Clio, South Carolina, where Abe owned and operated Cohen's Department Store. The couple had one child, Cecile Cohen Waronker (1935- ) who married William L. Waronker in 1958. Abe was a founder of the shul in nearby Dillon, South Carolina, which would eventually become the Ohav Shalom Congregation, renamed in 1939 by Rabbi Samuel R. Shillman. Abe later served as president during the years following the construction of the congregation's first synagogue in 1942. He also served as vice-mayor of Clio, South Carolina. After his death in 1969, his wife Betty continued to run the family's store in Clio until she moved to Atlanta in 1987.
