Biographical Note
In 1938, Minnie Tewel Baum, a resident of Camden, South Carolina, was contacted by Malie Landsmann, a cousin living in Berlin, Germany. Landsmann sought Baum's assistance to help her and her family escape Nazi Germany. Baum and Landsmann corresponded for three years, during which Baum tried to find ways for the Landsmann family to immigrate to America. Baum researched travel arrangements, obtained affidavits, and investigated immigration to other countries, including Cuba. None of these efforts was successful, and in June 1941, Baum received the last of Landsmann's letters.
