Biographical Note

Helene Monowitz (1927-2007) was born in Czestochowa, Poland. In 1941, the Monowitz family was forced into the Czestochowa ghetto along with other Jewish residents of the city and surrounding towns. Helene's mother and sister were deported from the ghetto and sent to Treblinka; Helene and her father survived by lying to Nazi authorities about their ages, which secured them work in a munitions factory. In 1947, Helene married Simon Silberberg, a native of Lodz, Poland, in Regensburg, Germany. They immigrated to the United States on January 20, 1949, and settled in Brooklyn, New York.
