Biographical Note

Nathan Addlestone (1913-2001) was born to Rachel and Abraham Addlestone in Charleston, South Carolina. Though Nathan was registered to begin college at the University of South Carolina in 1931, due to difficulties caused by the Great Depression, he was forced to forgo college to help with the family's scrap metal business. He went on to establish several of his own highly successful scrap metal businesses, including Steelmet, Incorporated and Addlestone International Corporation. Nathan also served on the Foreign Trade Committee for the Institute of Scrap, Iron, and Steel and the Trident Technical College Area Commission.

In 1937, Nathan married Ruth Axelrod and the couple had two children, Carol and Susan. After 42 years of marriage, Nathan and Ruth were divorced, and in 1982 Nathan married Marlene Alfred Kronsberg.

Throughout his life, Nathan was known for his support of education. He gave significant gifts to Addlestone Hebrew Academy, Trident Technical College, and the College of Charleston, among other Charleston institutions. At the College of Charleston, he established an endowment for Lowcountry Art and Culture and, with his wife Marlene, donated 1.5 million dollars towards the College's new library, completed in 2005. To honor their generous support, the College named the building the Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library.
