| Abstract: | Collection consists of eleven letters from Warren Hubert Moïse to his nephew Edwin Warren Moïse and four letters from Warren Hubert to Edwin's wife, Marion Cobb Gerdine Moïse. The letters discuss the careers of Warren Hubert's father, Edwin Warren Moïse, a prominent attorney, legislator, and judge in Louisiana, and his uncle, the painter Theodore Sidney Moïse. Warren Hubert details the Moïses' financial struggles after the Civil War and provides genealogical information about the extended Moïse family as well as the family of his mother, Louise Hubert, Edwin Warren's second wife, and the family of Matilda Jane Vaughn, Theodore Sidney's second wife. The collection also includes two letters to his nephew Edwin Warren Moïse from the Metropolitan Museum of Art offering advice on care of a portrait of his grandfather, Edwin Warren Moïse, painted by Theodore Sidney Moïse as well as a series of photographs of Warren Hubert Moïse and friends originally enclosed in a letter to Edwin Warren Moïse. |

Biographical Note
Warren Hubert Moïse (1864-1939) was born to Louise Hubert (1827-1875) and Edwin Warren Moïse (1810-1868) in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. He was the youngest child in a large family of thirteen children, including two from a previous marriage. His father, a prominent attorney, served in the Louisiana House of Representatives and as attorney general of the state. Early in the Civil War he was appointed district judge of the Confederate States of America with a jurisdiction covering Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. Edwin Warren Moïse's decision to invest his wealth in Confederate bonds left his family in poverty after the war. Despite his loss, he managed to establish himself in New Orleans shortly after the war and sent for his wife and children to join him. He died in 1868, again leaving the family financially unstable. To support the family, Warren Hubert's eldest brother, Hyam, began working as a bookkeeper while two of his older sisters became governesses. Warren Hubert's early education was erratic and while he eventually enrolled in Louisiana State University, he left after a single term.
As an adult, Warren Hubert moved west to California and in 1902 married Laura Mason (1876-1922). They settled in San Francisco, where he worked as a stock broker before retiring in 1933.
Edwin Warren Moïse (1889-1961), Warren Hubert Moïse's nephew, was born to Mary Gaston (1865-1936) and Theodore Sidney Moïse (1862-1915) in Montgomery, Alabama, and grew up in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and then the University of Georgia, where he won a Rhodes scholarship in the class of 1911. He served as a major in World War I and earned a law degree from Oxford University in 1919. He married his first wife, Marion Cobb Gerdine (1893-1950), in 1917, and the couple had one daughter. Marion died in 1950 and a year and a half later Warren married Dorothy Todd.
