Title: Emmett Robinson Papers

Collection #: 0039

Dates: 1931-1977

Size: 7 items / 2 v.

Biographical Note: Actor, stage designer, artist, and director. Emmett Edward Robinson was born in Ocala (Fla.) and moved to Charleston (S.C.) in the 1920s. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1935 and received a master's degree from Yale University in 1941. Robinson became the managing director of the Footlight Players, a Charleston (S.C.) community theater group, in 1935. He died in 1988.

Scope and Content Note: The Emmett Robinson papers consist of a typewritten, annotated draft (1935) of a book entitled "Source History of the Drama in Ante-Bellum Charleston, S.C. (1800-1861), " playbills (1941) for plays at the County Theatre (Suffern, N.Y.), a photocopy of an article (1958) about the Footlight Players at the Dock Street Theatre (Charleston, S.C.), a holograph [?] poem, and two scrapbooks.

One scrapbook (1931-1977) contains mostly playbills and clippings concerning plays staged by the Dramatic Society of the College of Charleston, the Footlight Players, and the Peruchi's Theatre Art Group. The scrapbook also contains Robinson's handwritten "List of performances" of the plays in which he was involved as an actor, designer, or director from 1931 to 1951. Another scrapbook (1935- 1937) contains photographs and copies of documents (including plan views) pertaining to the restoration of the Planters' Hotel (Charleston, S.C.), photostats of engravings depicting the interiors and exteriors of several English theaters, and typewritten excerpts from various books about the American theater and English and American stage actors.
