Biographical Note: Charleston, South Carolina rice mill company located at the west end of Tradd Street. Chisolm's Rice Mill was founded by A.W. or George Chisolm during the late 1820s and later became the property of R.T. Chisolm and Sons. By 1850 the mill employed 80 workers and annually pounded 20,000 barrels of rice. In January, 1859, the main plant and most of the adjoining buildings were destroyed in a fire. A new four-story brick structure was immediately built. The Chisolms erected several other buildings including a cooperage, a gas plant, and a storehouse. It required 150 workers to operate the new factory.
Scope and Content Note: Chisolm's Rice Mill records include letterpress copybooks (1890-1902, with a plan view of the rice store and wharfs, and monthy records of amounts paid and due at the mill), cash books (1897-1908), balance books (1873-1911), general ledgers (1889-1908), and vouchers and receipts (with index, 1889-1912) for companies and individuals for goods and services.
