Biographical Note: Family and business correspondence, plantation records, slave lists, military documents, accounting records, legal documents and Civil War letters of the Heyward and Ferguson families on the Combahee, Savannah and the Cooper Rivers in the Low Country near Charleston, South Carolina.
Scope and Content Note: The papers consist of family and business correspondence between members of the Heyward family. Nathaniel Heyward (1766-1851) of South Carolina and his wife Henrietta Manigault Heyward (1769-1827) correspond with their sons Nathaniel Heyward (1790-1819) and William Manigault Heyward (1788-1820); their grandsons Nathaniel Barnwell Heyward (1816-1891), James Barnwell Heyward (1817-1886) and William Henry Heyward (1817-1889); and other relations regarding plantation provisions and rice planting along the Combahee and Savannah Rivers, purchase of land, travels in Europe, and family deaths.
Legal documentation consists of payment and loans to family members for the purchase of slaves, property and mortgages. Plantation records consist of planting and harvesting records for Myrtle Grove plantation, 1848-1852; slave names and numbers for Rotterdam, Hamburgh, Amsterdam and Fife Plantations, 1852; cloth, blankets and tools given to slaves; Thomas B. Ferguson's (1841-1922) contracts and correspondence with the plantation overseers, tenants and freedmen; and correspondence concerning Dean Hall and Dockon plantations near the Cooper River.
Civil War letters concern the death of Nathaniel Augustus Heyward in 1862 at the Second Battle of Manassas, and the service of Frances William Heyward (1844-1907), Thomas B. Ferguson (1841-1922) and James Ferguson (1784-1874) in the Confederate Army.
